Can Someone with Mammalian Meat Allergy (MMA) or Alpha-Gal Syndrome Eat Camel Meat?
Mammalian Meat Allergy (MMA), also known as Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS), is a food allergy that can develop after a bite from certain ticks, most commonly the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) in Australia. The allergy is triggered by a sugar molecule called galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), found in the tissues of most mammals. When someone with MMA/AGS consumes red meat such as beef, pork, or lamb, their immune system reacts to the alpha-gal molecule, leading to allergic symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
Camel Meat and MMA/AGS
Camel meat does contain the alpha-gal antigen, however, there are anecdotal reports suggesting that some individuals with AGS may not experience reactions to camel meat. This evidence is yet to be verified by scientific research. The lack of a standardised clinical test for MMA contributes to the difficulty in establishing consistent responses among sufferers, as symptoms and sensitivities can vary greatly between individuals.
The allergy is believed to be to meat from even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyla) – which includes cows, swine, camels, sheep and goats. However, in trials, pin prick testing of affected individuals using different meat samples (mainly pork and beef, and pork and beef offal) showed varying results. A consistent clinical test to diagnose the allergy is yet to be properly developed and diagnosis relies on clinical symptoms from the sufferer.
While some people with MMA/AGS can reportedly safely consume camel meat, since reactions can vary from person to person, it’s essential for anyone with MMA to consult their healthcare provider before trying camel meat or any new foods.

A Personal Story: Marylin Smith’s Experience with Camel Meat
“I have Mammalian Meat Allergy, and I can eat Camel Meat”
Marylin Smith from Ipswich developed Mammalian Meat Allergy after being bitten by a tick about 15 years ago. Following the bite, she began having severe allergic reactions to most red meats. After consuming beef or lamb, she would develop a raging red rash that was “unspeakably itchy”. She would also experience pounding headaches, along with alarming heart palpitations that really had her worried.
Before her diagnosis, Marylin loved eating lamb and beef, so losing these from her diet was difficult. Over time, she heard from other MMA sufferers that camel and goat meat didn’t trigger their allergic reactions. Desperate to add red meat back to her meals, she tried both about eight years ago and was relieved to discover that she didn’t react to either of those meats.
In recent times, Marylin has been sourcing Halal certified TAWCC camel meat from Summer Land Camels, conveniently located near her home in Ipswich. She and her husband visit the farm regularly to stock up, using the camel meat in dishes like lasagne, Irish stew, and curry.
When asked about the taste, Marylin said, “It looks and tastes similar to beef, but it has a sweeter flavour that I really enjoy.”
Camel Dairy as an Option for Dairy Allergies
Although less common, MMA can also cause an allergic reaction to dairy products. This meant Marylin had to give up traditional cow's milk and dairy but she discovered she can safely consume camel dairy products without having a reaction. During her trips to Summer Land Camels, she sometimes treats herself to Camel Milk Gelato, which she describes as "delicious".
Important Considerations
While camel meat and camel dairy may be an option for individuals with MMA/Alpha-Gal Syndrome, it's always important to consult a healthcare provider or allergist before trying new foods. Individual sensitivities can vary, and a professional can offer personalised advice based on your specific condition.
